Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act
The United States has undergone a lot of changes with regard to gaming and gambling laws in the country. During the last couple of years most states have legalized gambling, that include regulated casino-styled games, lotteries, etc. There has also been a tremendous boom in the establishment of Native American casinos. Online gambling and betting has increased considerably and nowadays you will find most players wagering on the internet rather than traveling to any of the land based casinos. Well, you must be wondering if online gambling is legal in the USA. As a matter of fact, online gambling is still illegal in some parts of the United States. The unlawful internet gambling enforcement act of 2006 (UIGEA) made it illegal for US residents to engage in any kind of online gambling activity. However, certain states like Florida, Nevada, Louisiana, Iowa, and many more are regulated and licensed to gambling activities.
Although most of the US residents are hoping for the gambling laws to be changed in the future, several hundreds of dollars are wagered daily on horse racing and other forms of sports betting activities available on the internet. Currently horse racing is one of the only forms of online betting that is legalized by the federal government. The amount of money wagered on such races has increased dramatically across the country and could be considered the only reason that racing is still carried on in so many states.
There are still, a number of US states that prohibit horse race and greyhound race wagering online for various reasons. Till date, no form of online sports wagering is legal. In 2006, ex-President of the United States, George W. Bush signed the "Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act." This act restricted the US companies from transferring money to and from any of the online betting portals. The act also brought in restrictions to Neteller and Click2Pay that were used to make online fund transfers to online gambling sites.
Americans are hoping that Congressman, Barney Frank’s bill will regulate and legalize online / virtual gambling for US players. A number of reasons why gambling should be legalized have been put forward by gambling supporters. They believe that gambling would help in enhancing the country’s revenue especially after the global recession. If the country taxed online gambling the same way it did for other types of sports betting, then this would definitely create a new stream of revenue for the country.
If online gambling was legalized in the US hundreds of jobs could be generated in the government and private business sectors. As President Obama is looking to create new jobs this would definitely be a huge benefit to the unemployed people in the USA.
If major gambling corporations, say Harrah’s or MGM-Mirage created online gambling outfits, consequently several jobs could be created there by created a larger pool of revenue. Within no time, jobs could be generated for every department right from maintenance, to customer support and management. There would also be a need for full fledged management groups for the handling and recording of wagers made at casinos, poker rooms, as well as horse racing bets. These are just two of the options that could improve the state and federal debt. All of that could change with a simple approval and change to the law. Private businesses could sprout up and flourish within the country and prove to be a huge benefit for all gambling enthusiasts in America.
